How to keep your eyes healthy

Your eyes are not to be taken for granted. These are some easy ways to ensure your eyes stay healthy.

Take Good Care of Yourself

Your eye health begins with what you eat. Vitamins C and E, lutein and zinc, and omega-3 fatty acid, lutein and zinc may help prevent age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and lutein. You can get them by filling your plate with:

  • Collards, spinach, and kale are all green leafy vegetables.
  • Tuna, salmon, and other oily fish
  • Non-meat proteins include eggs, nuts, beans and legumes
  • Oranges and other citrus fruits and juices
  • Pork and oysters

A balanced diet will help you maintain healthy body weight. This will lower your chances of obesity or related diseases such as type2 diabetes, the most common cause of blindness.

Stop Smoking

This increases your chances of getting cataracts and damage to the optic nerve. Macular degeneration is another medical problem. You can continue trying to quit smoking if you have failed before. You will succeed more often if you attempt to quit. Ask your doctor for help.

Wear Sunglasses

Your eyes are protected from the UV rays by using the right pair of sunglasses. Being exposed to too much UV light can increase your chances of developing cataracts or macular degeneration.

It would be best to choose a pair that blocks between 99% and 100% of UVA rays. Wraparound lenses protect your eyes from the sides. While polarized lenses reduce the glare when you drive, they don’t offer additional protection.

Some contact lenses offer UV protection. Sunglasses are a great option to add an extra layer of protection.

Wear Safety Eyewear

Wear safety glasses or protective goggles if exposed to hazardous or airborne substances at work or home.

Sports can also cause eye injuries like ice hockey and racquetball. Eye protection is essential. Protect your eyes with helmets with protective masks for the face or goggles made of polycarbonate lenses.

Take Your Eyes Off of the Computer Screen

Too much time spent staring at a phone or computer screen can lead to:

  • Eyestrain
  • Brilliance in vision
  • Focusing at a distance can be difficult
  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder, neck, and back pain

Protect your eyes with these tips:

  • Check that your prescription for glasses or contacts is current and suitable for viewing a computer screen.
  • Talk to your doctor if your strain continues.
  • Place your eyes so that the top of the screen is in line with your eyes. This allows you to look slightly lower at the screen.
  • Avoid glare from lights and windows. If necessary, use an anti-glare filter.
  • Select a supportive, comfortable chair. Place it, so your feet are flat on a hard surface.
  • If your eyes are dry, you can blink more or use artificial tears.
  • Every 20 minutes, take a break from your computer. For 20 seconds, look 20 feet away. Take a 15-minute rest every two hours.

Keep visiting your eye doctor regularly.

Everybody needs an eye exam at least once a year, even children. This helps protect your eyesight and allows you to see at your best.

Eye examinations can detect diseases such as glaucoma that don’t have symptoms. You should be able to identify them quickly to be treated as soon as possible.

Depending on your eye health needs, you can choose to see either one or both of these doctors.

  • Ophthalmologists, medical doctors who are trained in eye care, are specialists. Ophthalmologists can treat and manage eye diseases and provide general eye care.
  • After graduating from college, optometrists have completed 4 years of specialized training. They can provide general eye care and diagnose and treat many eye diseases. They do not perform eye surgery.

A comprehensive eye exam might include:

  • Discussing your family and personal medical history
  • Vision Test To determine if you are nearsighted or farsighted, have an Astigmatism (a curving cornea blurring vision) or have presbyopia (age-related vision problems).
  • To test how well your eyes function together, take these tests.
  • To test for glaucoma, eye pressure and optic nerve tests were done.
  • Before and after dilation, external and microscopic examinations of your eyes

Other tests may also be required.
